Travelling artists arouse an idea of adventure and discovery – of a departure to the unknown and a fulfilled homecoming.
A story told over and over again with endings from tragic to happy, about the youth who went forth to learn what fear was or about sailing around the world in 80 days.
Travelling artists get an idea of what is, according to their assignment. They transpose their attention to a symbolic level.
The journey finds a reflex on the surface of the picture carrier. In manifold realizations and media the experience find its way mediately back to the starting point of the journey.
The medium again determines the position and defines a unique point of view upon the travelled stretch of way.
When you go travelling … – … you will consider at first, where and with whom you would like to depart to explore the far and foreign.

Also the question arises which recording system will be the most suitable tool to mediate between the foreign and the own. So the author of these lines asked himself which artist he should virtually place himself on the backpack in order to see over his shoulder while the artist is rambling afield.
The result of this is an exhibition that shows the visitor out into the world of travelling artists scrutinizing and interpreting these journeys in various ways.
Coffered safely in the luggage is the memory of Macke and Klee and their inspiration of light and the outland, before the eyes a globalized world that seems to be available on a flat-rate basis in the digital light.
What can be the point of artists travelling today? What about the dream of travelling – the artist’s journey – that is tied to the desire for uniqueness, authenticity, nativeness and exoticism? Is this dream viable? Or is it just a phantasm, an ugly imperialistic gesture of conquest intending to absorb the extrinsic.
The exhibition “Taking Notes and Measures” attempts to take different angles of view on artists’ travels, hopes for the inexplicable ‘marvels on the way’ and for making common cause on an enjoyable route section.
