The exhibition Beyond the Surfaces of Purity proposes a critical look at notions of uncertainty, crises, and sociocultural conflicts in contemporary societies. Today’s events indicate the abrupt strengthening of ultraconservative ideas in the social, economic, and political spheres. In times of uncertainty, in which people are questioning the value of representative democracy and the current socioeconomic system, the neoconservative narrative tends to aggravate the societal and economical inequalities and forge false crisis in order to maintain the capital power. In this context, problematizing in art, themes concerning “otherness”, diversity, colonialism, economy, and horizontal social structures, becomes fundamental for the development of a genuine democratic global society. Beyond the Surfaces of Purity presents four young artists based in Hamburg – Adrian Lopez, Filipe Lippe, Nico Lillo and Paul Glaw – who are up to thematize these topics in their works while expending their pictorial practices to other mediums, such as video, installation, poetry and to life.
